In short, research has produced some findings that support the concept of increased testosterone following Grape Seed Extract supplementation. However, there is more to this relationship than meets the eye.
Rather, instead of directly increasing Testosterone levels, the compounds found within Grape Seed Extract have been known to inhibit the production of estrogen and estradiol (the hormones in which act to counterbalance testosterone levels in the body). Or for you science lovers out there, Grape Seed Extract reportedly contains a substance called procyanidin B2, which is a naturally occurring aromatase inhibitor.
Let me explain a little further.
Excess testosterone circulating in the body will undergo a process known as aromatization. During which, the aromatase enzyme will chemically convert free testosterone to estrogen and estradiol. Ultimately, this enzyme’s job is to reduce the amount of available testosterone in the body and increase the amount of available estrogen and estradiol.
So Grape Seed Extract Can Increase Testosterone?
Well, not so fast.. One key factor is often forgotten when discussing this topic. That is, the conversion of free testosterone to estradiol and estrone in the body does not solely rely on the action of the aromatase enzyme and can occur via a host of different pathways.
Despite this, [one study] that looked at the effects Letrozole, (another aromatase inhibiting drug), found that testosterone in both younger and older males can be seen to rise 146% after 28 days of consumption!
What’s even more interesting, is that luteinizing hormone, which controls the production of testosterone, was also observed to be elevated by a whopping 339 and 323% in the young and the elderly, respectively.
Theoretically, this means supplementation with Grape Seed Extract can potentially be beneficial in the elevation of testosterone, leading to increased performance and recovery.
Should Women Avoid Supplementing with Grape Seed Extract?
So, does this mean that if you’re a woman who is considering supplementing with Grape Seed Extract, you should be concerned about potentially raising your levels of male sex hormones?
Not really. Because of the various mechanisms that the body can utilize to create and recycle both male and female sex hormones, the chance that you will develop male sex characteristics are slim. [One study] even suggests that females who have a genetic tendency for certain types of breast cancers can potentially fight tumor development after supplementation of aromatase inhibiting compounds.
